Nelson The Seal

Nelson is blessed following unveiling
by Sir
Robin Knox-Johnston CBE
‘Nelson’
Looe’s seal, is back home
Nelson the
one-eyed Grey bull Seal made Looe harbour in Cornwall his home for over 20 years
but sadly died in 2003. He was much loved by locals, tourists
and fishermen alike.
The
life-size
bronze sculpture of Nelson was
unveiled
by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston on the Pennyland Rocks in Looe
harbour entrance at noon on Wednesday 28 May 2008.
Nelson was blessed and then honoured with a flypast from 849
Naval Air Squadron.
Nelson provides Looe with an imposing and
handsome outdoor work of art which is becoming a powerful iconic
symbol for Looe. Nelson evokes thoughts of the sea,
fishing, wildlife and the environment as well as stimulating
tourism in the area – and brings a smile to one’s face.
Generous support in kind from
the Duchy of Cornwall, Looe Harbour Commission and
Suzie Marsh, the internationally
known local animal sculptor, who will sculpt Nelson
for gratis are helping to bring the project
to fruition. We also have grants from Caradon District Council
and Looe Town Council together with various donations including
one from HRH The Prince of Wales Duke of Cornwall.
We
still need your donations to raise maintenance funds.
